From Couch to 10K: Maria’s Story
Eighteen months ago Maria could not run for the bus. Last weekend she finished her first 10K. Here is how she did it.
Maria started with a simple goal: run for one minute without stopping. This is her story, in her own words.
“The first week I walked more than I ran. I did it anyway, three times a week, and wrote every session in a notebook.”
The plan
- Weeks 1–8: run/walk intervals, adding one minute of running each week.
- Weeks 9–16: continuous 5K at an easy pace.
- Weeks 17–24: one longer run each weekend, up to 10 km.
What helped most
- A running buddy for the Saturday runs.
- Proper shoes after a gait check in store.
- Rest days, taken seriously.
“Crossing the finish line, I cried. Then I signed up for the next one.”
