How to Layer for Cold-Weather Workouts
A simple three-layer system that keeps you warm, dry and comfortable from the first mile to the last.
Cold weather is no reason to stop training. Dress in layers you can adjust, and you will stay comfortable from warm-up to cool-down.
Base layer: stay dry
A snug, moisture-wicking top moves sweat away from your skin. Avoid cotton: it stays wet and cold.
Mid layer: stay warm
A light fleece or brushed long-sleeve traps heat. On mild days you can skip it.
Outer layer: stay protected
A windproof, water-resistant shell blocks wind and light rain while letting heat escape.
Do not forget
- Gloves and a hat: you lose a lot of heat through hands and head.
- Reflective details for dark mornings.
- Dress for the second mile: you should feel slightly cold when you start.
