Trail Running for Beginners
Swap the pavement for the path: what to wear, how to pace and how to stay safe on your first trail runs.
Trail running is slower, softer and far more scenic than the road. Here is how to start.
Run by effort, not pace
Hills and roots will slow you down. Keep your breathing easy and walk the steep climbs, as the experts do.
What to wear
- Trail shoes with grip and a protective toe.
- A light layer you can tie around your waist.
- A small bottle or vest for runs over an hour.
Stay safe
- Tell someone your route.
- Carry your phone and download the map.
- Look three steps ahead, not at your feet.
Start with a well-marked 5 km loop and enjoy the view.
